Fine Gardens

Garden bed with layered plantings through the growing season

A garden with beauty throughout the growing seasons

Our horticulturists are plant people. They know what they love, they want to know what you love, and they get excited about finding the right plant for the right place. Whether you are on a coastal property in Scarborough or an inland yard in Gorham or Gray, bring us a garden you have been tending for years, an empty bed, or a corner of the yard you have never known what to do with. We can work with what is already there, introduce plants you may not know, and build a garden that gives you something new to notice as the seasons change.

What we do

We build gardens around the plants you love and the conditions in your yard. Our horticulturists consider sun, soil, drainage, wind, and salt exposure, then combine bloom times, foliage, color, height, and texture for interest throughout the growing seasons. We also tend established gardens, including pruning shrubs and perennials and caring for garden beds.

Who is it for

For homeowners who want a garden planned with purpose

We work well with homeowners who care about the plants in their yard and want knowledgeable people making decisions about them. You may want to build a new garden, improve one you already have, or have our horticulturists provide ongoing care for an established garden. You may already know the plants, colors, or kind of garden you love, or you may want us to introduce you to possibilities you have not considered. We bring the plant knowledge and creative judgment. You tell us what you love, and together we decide what makes sense for your garden and your property.

Questions you may have

Will my garden only look good in July?

No. We stagger the species so something is in bloom from spring through fall, and we plan for foliage and structure in the months between.

Do you use native plants?

Wherever they fit. Natives hold up on Maine's coast and bring in the birds, butterflies, and pollinators that make a garden feel alive.

Why does a new bed look sparse the first season?

Because every plant is spaced for the size it will reach, not the size it is on planting day. A bed that looks full in year one is crowded by year three. Ours fill in as they mature.

Who takes care of the garden after it is planted?

We do, if you want us to: pruning, seasonal cutbacks, and soil work on a schedule.
