Patio with a View

A clear view of the ocean

The homeowners had one area of their backyard with a clear view of the ocean, but they needed a flat place to use it. We designed and built a curved retaining wall and patio area that gave them a place to sit, gather around their Solo Stove, and enjoy the view.

Before

A flat place to gather

The homeowners wanted to make better use of the part of their yard overlooking the ocean. Their priority was straightforward: create enough level ground for a comfortable sitting area while keeping the view that made this particular part of the property worth using.

Construction

A stone that needed a place

One large stone kept resisting every place we considered for it. The homeowner and Zach both wanted to use it, and rather than force it into the wall, we decided to make it a focal point. We perched the stone on a single smaller rock, creating a detail that appears to float above its base. Learn more about our process.

After

A curved wall above the yard

We built the curved retaining wall to create the level area overlooking the ocean, with steps connecting it to the lower portion of the yard. The homeowners now have the flat gathering area they wanted, with room for their Solo Stove and the ocean view in front of them.
